Black Lake (Crno Jezero) Guide

Black Lake: Durmitor's Crown Jewel Guide

Prepare to be captivated by the serene beauty of Black Lake (Crno Jezero), often considered the crown jewel of Durmitor National Park. This stunning glacial lake, nestled at the foot of towering peaks, offers breathtaking views and a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Its dark, reflective waters mirror the surrounding forests and mountains, creating a picture-perfect scene that will leave you in awe. Black Lake's formation is a testament to the power of glaciers. Over thousands of years, glacial activity carved out the basin that now holds the lake. Fed by underground springs and melting snow, the lake is actually composed of two smaller lakes, Veliko Jezero (Big Lake) and Malo Jezero (Small Lake), connected by a narrow strait that sometimes dries up in late summer. The surrounding forests are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, adding to the lake's natural charm. Black Lake offers a variety of activities for visitors. A well-maintained walking trail circles the lake, providing stunning views from every angle. You can rent a rowboat or kayak and explore the lake's calm waters at your own pace. Swimming is also possible, although the water can be quite cold, even in summer. For those seeking a more challenging hike, trails lead up to the surrounding peaks, offering panoramic views of the lake and the entire Durmitor National Park. After your exploration, enjoy a picnic by the lake or savor traditional Montenegrin cuisine at a nearby restaurant in Zabljak.
